NATIONAL KINDNESS ACT PASSED

APRIL 11, 2050

Dear Citizen,
The dearth of kindness in Singapore has undermined Singapore’s ability to sustain meaningful diplomatic relations with our counterparts and generated considerable national security risks.
Following a six-month public consultation and robust discussions in Parliament, the Government of Singapore has passed the National Kindness Act, an all-encompassing policy framework.
Announcing the launch of the Act in Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Wong Hup Cheong said that the move signals a "new social contract" between the Government and its people that can "herald a new age of participatory policymaking for Singapore".
You have a part to play in the National Kindness Act under this new social contract.
<<button [[Tell me more!|Social Contract><> <<button [[What?><>

Attention!
Under the National Kindness Act, the following announcement applies to you.

Values in Action scheme

The 50-year-old Values in Action scheme of community work and service in school will be reviewed, and will become a mandatory scheme.
To reinforce the Government's commitment to Kindness, VIA work will now account for 50 % of the weightage at national exams. A fail mark in the VIA component will render one ineligible for graduation from school.

Kindness Bootcamp

At Kindness Bootcamp, you will be able to rub shoulders with students from all over Singapore and learn from their Kindness experiences in school - a rare opportunity to improve your Kindness capital (something that you and your peers seem to sorely lacking in).

There are different tracks that you can specialise in, and upon completion of the programme, you will be able to receive 500 CCs for your efforts!
Here are your options:

FORMER KINDNESS PATROL OFFICER CHARGED WITH CHEATING
A former Kindness Patrol Officer in the Jurong district has been hauled to court and charged for cheating the Kindness Bureau of more than 20,000 Courtesy Credits, and abusing using his position as a KayPO.
Bob Tan Boon Huat, 47, faces three charges - two counts of cheating, and one count of forgery for the purpose of cheating.
According to court documents, he had conspired with Joe Chang Teck Meng, 47, to illegally transfer 25,000 Courtesy Credits to each of their accounts.
This is the first case of alleged corruption that has come to light since the launch of the National Kindness Act in 2050.

SOCIAL CONTRACT

Please have a look at the following terms of the Kindness Act

Courtesy Credit

Social benefits and eligibility for nationwide schemes and programmes will now be calculated in terms of Courtesy Credit (CC).
CCs can be claimed for priority in:
•Entry to primary and secondary schools under the Affiliated Kindness Scheme
•Procurement of Housing Board BTO flats
•Access to Michelin-starred hawker centre meals
•Civil service positions listed under the Jobs Bank portal
And more!

Kindness surveillance

The CC scheme will be enforced through Kindness Surveillance, supported by a volunteer network of independent, non-partisan Kindness Patrol Officers (KayPOs).
They will log witnessed instances of Kind Acts. Those caught in acts that run counter to the ethos of the CC scheme will have CCs deducted accordingly from their CC balance.

Each role comes with a rigorous set of expectations for advancement under the CC scheme. Remember, it is only through hard work that each of us can earn the place in society that we deserve.

But Joe has other problems to think about. He has been doing Kind Acts diligently, but poor, unlucky him almost never gets these acts witnessed by a KayPO.

Joe has a proposition for you. If you can just grant him access to your KayPO awards portal, he can use that link to hack into the systems undetected, and upgrade his CC balance.

You give up on the Kindness system and migrate to another country, where you end up making a name for yourself by writing critical articles about the Kindness Act.
You know you will never be able to return home, but you have already accepted that this is the sacrifice that you'll have to make.

Hello, I am Singapore Institution's career counsellor.

It was the right choice for you to take up this Overseas Kindness Experience - a unique programme that only our school is able to offer for bright young scholars like you!
Remember to include this Experience as something that has opened your eyes to the inequalities of this world, made you aware of how lucky you are to be born and bred in this country, or maybe even possibly an inspiration behind why you wanted to launch a cutting-edge social enterprise.
Have you also tried out our [[Diversity Experiences]]?
If you've done so already, please feel free to [[move on->Graduation]]

Congratulations on finishing the rigorous programme at the Singapore Institution!

I am sure you will have a bright future ahead under the National Kindness Act with the Kindness capital that you have accumulated.

Welcome to the Diversity Experience, which can help you sheltered, well-mannered young gentlemen and women get out of your comfort zones and engage in some meaningful inter-class mixing; overcoming social stratification and fostering national solidarity through a common shared experience!

Everyone gets 100 CC credited to their accounts on a monthly basis while they are enrolled in this programme.
But the better-performers and the ones who demonstrate evidence of Kindness Leadership traits can get bonus CCs and maybe even get talent-spotted by the National Kindness Bureau!
<<button [[Yes, let's get started!|Options><>

This Diversity Experience will last for a week.
During this period, for every person of lower SES (Socio-Economic Status) you meet and add as a friend on your social media accounts, you will be able to receive 20 CCs!

Do remember to take some good photos, which can then go into our annual school report.
Enjoy!
<<button [[Wowee, let's start|Outcome><>
<<button [[Ugh, do I really have to do this|Outcome 2><>

You are friendly and cheerful to everyone you meet who seems to have fit the bill of being in a lower SES bracket. You remember faces, names, say hi and exchange pleasantries.

At the end of the week, you have accumulated more than 100 friends on your various social accounts. That's a whopping 2,000 CCs! Congrats!
<<button [[Collect my CCs|Collect><>

You don't care about whether you mix with people of lower SES backgrounds or not. After all, these people have little in common with you.
At the end of the week, you don't add any new friends to your social media account.

The career counsellor at school calls you in for a meeting.
"This is unacceptable behaviour from a student from the esteemed Singapore Institution! Do you really want to put our good name at risk, just because of your uncaring manners? Do you really want us to get slapped with the dreaded label of elitism again?"
"You have to try harder," she admonishes.

We have noted your contact details and will be in touch with you very soon about university options and future job postings.
Looking forward to working with you!

"Please, they have been working hard on this for a month. Isn't your centre a charity? Beggars can't be choosers, and there aren't any other organisations that are willing to work with our school besides yours..."
You shuffle into the home with your classmates, and you burst into a chrous of Tian Mi Mi, swaying enthusiastically to the rhythms of a song with the rest of the group.

So, we hear that you have applied eight times to get a HDB flat. But since you cannot contribute to our nation's Total Fertility Rate, you have not heard back from them.
